Referees

VMSL Zero Tolerance Policy on Referee Abuse

Purpose

The policy exists to ensure that referees are treated with the same respect as players.
Verbal abuse, criticism, intimidation, or physical contact toward referees will not be tolerated.

Behavior and Consequences

Actions That Result in a Red Card

A red card (send-off) will be issued for:

  • Offensive language

  • Insulting language

  • Abusive language or gestures

  • Confrontational physical contact with a referee

These actions are considered serious misconduct.

Actions That Result in a Yellow Card

A yellow card (caution) may be given for:

  • Disrespect toward officials

  • Aggressive behavior

  • Confronting or challenging the referee

  • Running toward a referee to argue a decision

  • Surrounding a referee

  • Non-aggressive physical contact

Managers and Technical Staff

Coaches and staff in the technical area must also follow strict conduct rules.

Their behavior toward referees will be closely monitored and enforced.

Referees and Mistakes

The policy recognizes that:

  • Referees can make mistakes.

  • Some referees may officiate games above their experience level.

Because of this, players, coaches, and spectators must provide positive support, not abuse.

Reporting Concerns About Referees

Criticism of referees must not occur during the match.

Instead, concerns should be submitted through the proper channels:

  1. Contact the Referee Assignor or VMSL Discipline Member

  2. Submit a Referee Evaluation Form

These reports are handled confidentially.

Suspensions Across Leagues

Serious suspensions from VMSL may also apply to:

  • EDSA (Edmonton District Soccer Association)

  • ASA (Alberta Soccer Association)

Similarly, suspensions from those leagues can also apply in VMSL if officially confirmed.

League Affiliation

VMSL is affiliated with:

  • EDSA

  • ASA
